Most common FAQs about general information
?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to provide coverage for Canadian residents without dental benefits and a household income under $90,000 annually. It’s important to understand that this is a government dental benefit, not a free dental service.
The program is aimed at Canadians without access to dental coverage and is not meant to replace existing benefits from work, school, or private insurance plans.
Managed by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life, dentists are not responsible for determining eligibility or the services covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
Most common FAQs about program eligibility and access
?
Verify if you qualify by visiting the Canadian government’s website or by calling their helpline at 1-833-537-4342. Assistance is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.
Seniors aged 65 and older, individuals with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate, and children under 18 who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for the CDCP through the online platform.
All other eligible Canadians will have access to online applications in 2025.
Qualified applicants will receive a welcome package from Sun Life, which will include a member card, co-payment details, and the date when their CDCP dental coverage begins. The start date of your coverage will depend on when your application is submitted and processed, and it will vary for each individual.
Centre Dentaire Fairmount does not manage or oversee the CDCP, as it is a Government of Canada program. We are unable to assist with applications or eligibility questions. For more details, visit canada.ca/dental.
Don’t put off your dental visits or treatments! It’s smarter to continue with regular checkups now to identify any problems early, before they lead to pain or expensive treatments. For more tips on preventing dental issues, visit our Blog.
The CDCP does not offer free dental services. It is a government benefit that covers a portion of your dental expenses, but you might need to cover the remaining costs yourself.
Patients may need to make a co-payment, meaning they pay a part of their dental care costs under the CDCP, depending on their adjusted family net income.
Depending on their adjusted family net income, patients might need to contribute a co-payment, meaning they would cover a portion of their dental care costs under the CDCP.
No co-payment is required for families with an adjusted annual net income below $70,000 under the CDCP.
A 40% co-payment applies for families with an adjusted annual net income ranging from $70,000 to $79,999.
Families with an adjusted annual net income between $80,000 and $89,999 must pay 60% of the CDCP benefit.
It is very important that when scheduling your dental appointment, you talk to your dentist about the costs of your treatment and any costs that are not covered by CDCP.
Most common FAQs about the services covered by the program
?
Below are some of the services that may be covered by CDCP, as long as they are recommended by your dentist:
–
Some services require prior authorization, meaning you will need prior approval and these will be offered based on recommendations given to you by a dentist. Therefore, before starting treatment, your dentist will verify whether it will be covered by the CDCP.
These services that require prior authorization will be available starting in November 2024.
You can also obtain complete information on the details of all covered services by consulting the CDCP Dental Benefits Guide.
If you are already covered by other government dental programs (such as RAMQ – Children under 10) and are eligible for CDCP, you will also be able to apply. Benefits will be coordinated between programs, so your coverage will not be duplicated.
The Government of Canada has published information explaining this coordination between different programs in more detail.
You are entitled to all benefits for which you are eligible. In addition, CDCP is better funded and in many ways provides greater coverage than many provincial dental programs.
Participation in CDCP may make it easier for people with benefits through a provincial dental program to receive more comprehensive government-covered care. Your help in applying for CDCP if you do not already have it and in spreading the word is appreciated.
Most common FAQs about program payments and refunds
?
No, oral health providers in the Canadian Dental Care Plan must follow the program’s rules, which state that they must submit claims to Sun Life for direct reimbursement. Patients are not eligible to receive reimbursements from the CDCP themselves.
You might qualify for other programs offered by provincial and federal governments to help people in need access dental services.
Most common FAQs for those who already have dental insurance
?
No, the CDCP is intended for Canadian residents without dental benefits. To be eligible for the CDCP, you must not have any form of dental insurance or coverage.
Interesting fact: If you qualify for dental coverage through your work benefits, a professional association, or a student group, you are not eligible for the CDCP, even if you choose not to use or enroll in that coverage.
We are uncertain, and this should be a concern for everyone. Many Canadians get dental coverage through their jobs, schools, or other group plans. These plans give individuals the freedom to select their preferred dentist and decide on the type of dental care they want.
At Centre Dentaire Fairmount, we believe that the CDCP should focus on expanding access to care for those who lack benefits. It should not take away the existing dental coverage that people already have.
